Increasing plagiarism among Indian Pharma Students
« on: May 19, 2010, 10:19:48 AM »
Plagiarism :As per Wikipedia, use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author   and the representation of them as one's own original work or using the same in own work but without giving any acknowledgment to the original author.
also called as Academic Dishonesty(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_dishonesty).
as per the definition, even copying content from a book or even a website/blog without giving proper credit or taking permission from the author is a kind of plagiarism.

With the recent advant of new local journal publishers popping the scenario in the article publication sector in india is changing.

more and more professionals, specially students of mainly UG and PG level are interested in publishing review or research article in their name either due to personal interest or by pressure from the institutional guide.
this situation of increasing awareness of publishing the original work is definitely a great boon to Indian research scenario, but the underlying fraud of doing plagiarism is making all this thing down.

Its not only students that are responsible for this fraud work, but also the guide , university, journals editors and reviewers, publishers etc. all in some way a part of this. they cant shed off from their moral duty by just showing the declaration of the author about original work .

This all in all lowering the worthiness of Indian research work, we are losing our credibility and the same can be seen in the increasing cases of rejected articles from Indian authors who conducted research work in less known institutes in India.
Please come and share your views on how this plagiarism is increasing , factors responsible , and more importantly how it can be eradicated.

is referring to the seniors thesis is Plagiarism???
i think yes, many a times people just take the seniors thesis and just copy paste their intoductions in the thesis,in such case the person do have to take much of the hard work to read and make the introduction. Its like ready made material. In such case the quality of research and the scholars do not have much knowledge.
So this custom of referiing the thesis should be stopped!!!1

The word Refering is not an indicative of Plagiarism,

originally guide usually say student to refer the thesis or article of others, but this is the point where student failed to understand the motive.
by Refering its said that he has to take idea from the article/thesis on how to approach for a particular solution or conclusion, but this never meant copying the matter exactly from it and using it without any acknowledgment in own work.
now when that same student who passed by such fraud mean becomes a Guide for some other person later then for him the meaning for refering is still same and hence in long run this process of Refering has taken a general understood meaning for taking content from other articles or thesis.

May be recognizing authorities should made plagiarism checking softwares and tools compulsory in academic institutes.,
they should also check how effectively its being used..

Many countries have already started following this even at vocational educational level

check this example

Nice point Aravind , thanks for the documentary evidance too of the implication guidelines on plagirasim in AU.

In India we surely need to have some concrete measures taken to stop this cheating process.
The irnoy is that most of the persons doing this dont even have any knowledge that its not a good practice and the major reason is that all are indulged in this practice from the late phase of School education only, the higher secondary student when given assignment by school teacher copy it directly from the websites /blogs or from books as such and feel that he saved time for studies for the coming competititve exam , this process then become a regular habit and he later take it for granted way for writing assignments and later for thesis and articles. even some faculty promote students for copying matter from reference books.

Misinterpretation of the word REFERING in Indian context by both Students and Faculty is a major reason behind the increasing cases of plagiarism in India.

Indian Universities and regulatory bodies concerning this should take plagiarism seriously. some serious punishment should be their for persons found indulging in promoting plagiarism and the seriousness can be upto the level of fetching back the degree obtained by use of such practice / termination for a term or so.

but initially their should be a awareness to be generated among the students as mostly dont even know what they are doing.

thanks rehman for creating such nice topic to discuss
its the main problem coming in the research work at present time
as u told that all student want to publish the review or research article even those student who have no knowledge abt the paper publishing
as the burden comes from the faculty, or mainly due to the the current scenario of article publishing..
in this competition of article publishing the students increasing Plagiarism
the want to publish the paper by copying from others
but also editorial team of journals is equally responsible for Plagiarism bcoz the allow to publish the articles which have same material as the past papers
so to decrease Plagiarism faculty as well as editorial team of a journal should be aware abt this
if the research or review work is not completed then faculty mainly guide shall not put burden on the student for paper publishing
student also play their moral duty not to copy the whole work from a published papers...
