DEFINE SOLUBILTY
« on: May 05, 2008, 10:02:19 PM »
All of us know its defination but as this topic is newly created for different type of question related to pharma field.
so by this topic we can increase our knowledge abt the topic any member creates.
at first i m starting a new topic define solubilty.
its defination is simple but the boundation is that u should define solubilty in less than 10 words.
lets see how many replies came for this..

nice try joginder, but solubility can't be confined to a solid dissolved in liq becoz liquid and gases can also be dissolved in liq [Eg~ solubility of; alcohol in water, gases in water etc] and if we are talkin abt solubility a solution must be homogeneous and quantity of substance dissolved is alwayz as maximum quantity, and the solvent can't alwayz be be water( Eg~ chloroform) it can be any fluid, and solubility changes when solvent is changed so i wanna define it as:-

Maximum Extent of homogeneous miscibility of substances in Respective fluids.

OR

Maximum Quantity of a substance homogeneously mix into a fluid.

agree with the points of Ghost Guy .
just wish to add one more point :
Solubility also varies with Temperature, so you need to include a clause for temperature also in the definition.

While posting some description of terminology used to denote different extent of solublity as per I.P. :

Very Soluble :                                   Less then 1 mL of Solvent required to solubilize 1 gram of solute.
Freely Soluble :                                 From 1-10 mL of Solvent required to solubilize 1 gram of solute.
Soluble:                                          From 10-30 mL of Solvent required to solubilize 1 gram of solute
Sparingly Soluble :                             From 30-100 mL of Solvent required to solubilize 1 gram of solute.
Slightly Soluble :                               From 100-1000 mL of Solvent required to solubilize 1 gram of solute.
Very Slightly Soluble :                        From 1000-10000 mL of Solvent required to solubilize 1 gram of solute
Insoluble or Practically Insoluble :         More than 10000 mL of Solvent required to solubilize 1 gram of solute

According to IP ,the solubility is measured normally at a temperature between 20-30oC

hey neeshu ur definition is nice...but i want to modify it lil.... "solute in saturated solution at particular temperature n pressure"

here no need to mention volume(like 100 ml).....bcos 'saturated solution' term itself gives explanation for all n along with temperature, pressure also plays imporatant role in solubility.in solids n liquids solubility pressure don't play significant role.but while dissolving gases it plays imp role.acc to law of henry The solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the pressure of that gas above the surface of the solution.

Hello Swabriesh,

in the definition you wrote, how you dissolve a solvent into another solvent ??
for liquids we use the term miscibility, not solubility.
while as also mentioned in previous definitions, you forgot to include the effect of temperature and pressure which plays a very important role in the solubility.
